Typing Speed Test: How It Works & How to Get Your Best Score

Everything you need to know about typing speed tests. How WPM is calculated, what affects your score, and how to get your personal best.

How Typing Speed Tests Work

A typing speed test measures how many words per minute (WPM) you can type accurately. Here's exactly how it works and how to maximize your score.

How WPM Is Calculated

WPM = (Total Characters Typed / 5) / Minutes

A "word" in typing tests is standardized to 5 characters (including spaces). This means:

  • Typing 300 characters in 60 seconds = 60 WPM
  • Typing 150 characters in 30 seconds = 60 WPM

    Test Duration Guide

  • 30 seconds — Quick check, but less reliable
  • 60 seconds — Standard test, good balance of speed and reliability
  • 120 seconds — Most accurate, tests sustained speed
  • Tips for Your Best Score

  • Warm up with a practice round first
  • Read ahead — look 2-3 words ahead of what you're typing
  • Don't panic on errors — fix them quickly and move on
  • Breathe normally — holding your breath increases tension
  • Use a comfortable keyboard at a proper desk height
