Learn Touch Typing: A Complete Free Tutorial

Touch typing is the ability to type without looking at the keyboard. It's the single most impactful skill for anyone who uses a computer daily. This tutorial will take you from beginner to confident touch typist.

Why Learn Touch Typing?

  • 2–3x faster than hunt-and-peck typing
  • Less fatigue — your eyes stay on the screen
  • Fewer errors — muscle memory is more reliable than visual searching
  • Better posture — no need to look down constantly
  • Career advantage — required for many office jobs
  • Step 1: The Home Row

    Place your fingers on the home row keys:

    Left hand: Pinky on A, Ring on S, Middle on D, Index on F

    Right hand: Index on J, Middle on K, Ring on L, Pinky on ;

    Your index fingers should feel the small bumps on F and J — these are your anchor points.

    Step 2: Learn One Row at a Time

    Week 1: Practice only home row keys (A S D F G H J K L ;)

    Week 2: Add the top row (Q W E R T Y U I O P)

    Week 3: Add the bottom row (Z X C V B N M , . /)

    Week 4: Practice all rows together with real words
